Jagger told a Creem reporter: We wanted to be a blues band, but gave it up because it was a complete waste of time. Keith kept saying we were a blues band..., and in the beginning we were very dedicated. I didnt give a shit what they wanted to call it in the end. We did something else because we couldnt do R&B exactly right. M.J.: Well, I dont want to start explaining my old songs, because I think its more pleasurable for people to have their own interpretation of a song or a novel or a film... but your point of view seems a pretty valid one to me (laughs). You got it right, more or less. [When people started taking us as devil worshippers] I thought it was a really odd thing, because it was only one song, after all. It wasnt like it was a whole album, with lots of occult signs on the back. People seemed to embrace the image so readily, [and] it has carried all the way over into heavy metal bands today. Perhaps what made the topic so potent is that it hadnt been addressed that way in popular music before. Also, you seemed to take the subject matter seriously. M.J.: Well, for the duration of the song. Thats what these things are about. Its like acting in a movie; you try to act out the scene as believably as possible, whether you believe it or not. Thats called good acting.
