Record Shops
Boston’s heavily-independent music scene has spawned not only some great bands, but also some great record shops. Several of these have been around Boston for ages, and you’re sure to hear some good stories if you keep your ears open. As in any good record shop, the employees will be happy to direct you to whatever you’re looking for, or recommend something new.Popular Shops
- In Your Ear (founded 1982): You can purchase records in-person, from the store site, and at eBay from this renowned dealer. IYE has three store locations: Boston and Cambridge in Massachusetts and Warren, Rhode Island.
- Newbury Comics (founded 1978): As the name may imply, this shop actually started as a comic store and then slowly grew to focus on the new music trends of the time. Many Massachusetts musicians have put in time at one of the franchise’s 28 locations.
- Nuggets Records (founded 1978): Nuggets prides itself on those rare, hard-to-find items that become staples of their owner’s collections. You can check their inventory online and contact the owners for personal requests.
- Planet Records (founded 1983): Located within a block of both In Your Ear and a Newbury Comics, Planet Records offers a great selection and a sense of humor. Generate your band name and browse album art at their website.
